It really sounds like you were expecting a different story than the one that was told. From my viewpoint, Y isn't about the Earth in the aftermath of mass male extinction as much as it is about Yorick's maturation, and to a lesser extent, what it means to become a man in a world where the role of women in every level of human society has changed so dramatically so quickly. The plague provides a backdrop, but it's not the point of the story any more than the cause of the apocalyptic event is the point of The Road, or the exact judicial and legislative policies that led to rampant crime in Gotham City are the point of any given Batman story. Vaughn was conscious of the reader's interest in the background of the plague and intentionally provided a variety of explanations for what happened without settling on a definitive choice. There's nothing wrong with being unhappy with the fact that the story you got wasn't the story you felt you were promised, and there's nothing wrong with disliking Y on its own merits, but from your complaints here it really sounds like you expected a book that would more closely examine the various societal effects of the sudden death of every male on Earth.
Yes, that would have been more interesting to me. But I didn't have any strong expectations about the comic when I started reading it. I've hardly read any comics before, and it's one that some people thought was good, so I thought it might be good. Its title indicates it is about a man and his lastness; and accordingly, it opens with a big event in the man's personal life, followed immediately by the thing that makes him the last. That's about as much promise as I received, and I guess it was fulfilled to quota, as of the time when I stopped reading. I'm glad to experience a story about a man, or about an apocalypse, or both, if it's good. But this particular man did not interest me; he didn't talk like a real person and he wasn't funny enough to work as an inhumanly-clever-but-with-underlying-heart Joss Whedon-type character. I think I perceived that first, so that my interest in him waned right away and thereafter focused by default on the apocalypse thing.
I'm tempted to try to say it's lazy, and even grotesque, for the authors to half-ruin a whole world just to set up a story about some cutely wisecracking young man and his cute monkey. But that's dumb, you can pull off anything if you're funny enough about it. Or otherwise graceful enough.
Hm I should not try to say any more about this comic without actually reading some more of it. ^_^ |
