The Edge review section pointed out the uselessness of the fake open world approach in this latest PoP, and that's just symptomatic of the general lack of direction in the game. I don't care about the death rewinding or whatever, but it's just one long series of repeating areas that are too large and empty for their own good, punctuated by awful puzzles. The combat is still pointless, but instead of SoT's stealth kills, you are allowed to skip fighting at times (reward! as I think Fabio noted back in the day) by running up and hitting the activate button on a black cloud.
The platforming elements feel automatic and almost like prolonged QTE's in themselves, with only a tenuous connection to interactivity, which was the final nail in the coffin. The flying sequences are the most obvious example, but every part of the game fails in that capacity. Where earlier PoP's had a feeling of momentum in the accurate controls, this one is just boring to play. The animations look good at times, but not when there is nothing to do with them.
I gave up less than halfway and mailed it back. |
