I'm not particularly into the Handsome Boy project, but you sound like you work for Pitchforkmedia's hip hop division. What did you think of Deltron 3030, also weak-ass corny shit? Mr. Dobalina? I think you've been studying your "indie hip hop" guide a little too hard. The Madvillainy album was way overhyped and I prefer MM...Food for an MF Doom project, but come on, that stuff is pretty novelty. I don't think you're one to talk about stuff being "weakly produced", either. The Masta Killa album was a D-grade Wu album, which people slobbered over because wow, it's almost like 1993 again, i.e. it appeals to nostalgic Wu-Tang fans who can't get into current hip hop. Ghostface album was great, although a lot of the best stuff was left off and put onto "The Lost Tapes".
It's this kind of ridiculous "true heads listen to" attitude that pervades backpacker hip hop culture that makes it hard to stomach -- it's really evident now that they've all gotten hip hop blogs and completely annoyed the shit out of anyone who just listened to music they liked 'cause they thought it sounded good. If anything, So How's Your Girl is less whitebread than half the stuff in your top ten list there.
On a side note, not that this was a top ten list or anything, but I'd probably throw in some of the Diplomats stuff and Jadakiss (admittedly, its his mixtape that should be included, the album kind of fucked it up), as stuff that truly is better than SHYG and isn't just what's required to be checked off on the "indie hip hop cred" checklist.
Li'l Jon is indie now? I never knew. I haven't heard the Jadakiss mixtape, I'll look it up. Good call on the Diplomats stuff, too. The Deltron 3030 record didn't do a lot for me. You really think No Said Date is weak? I think it's got an element of nostalgia to it but that's because when I was getting into hip-hop in a more serious way the RZA's production was what hooked me so I think I have a soft spot for that style. I do really dig it, though. He was greta live. I also liked Madvillainy more than Mm... Food for the production, mostly - I wouldn't hold it as a classic all-time album (because, frankly, I don't think Doom will EVER make one of those, Vaudeville Villain included, as he's just way too inconsistent and willing to release waaaay too much shit), but that's personal preference. I dunno, it just rankles me that this totally ball-less, gutless nov-hop is lapped up. Forgot to say that the best hip-hop album I bought this year was Paris - The Devil Made Me Remix.
