If you'd ever been to a fancy dress party, you'd know the costumes are less about wish fulfillment than giving people who aren't in a position to get drunk an easy way to break the ice. When you run into someone dressed as a character you're familiar with, you've instantly got 15 minutes worth of strong relevant small talk to back yourself with while you try to figure out who it is you're talking to. It makes socializing easier and so appeals to people who have difficulty with that kind of thing.

The guy with the note reminds me of the time an intermediary got between me and a woman I was pursuing. I was at a sex show at a brothel in Chistchurch. There was a really drunk Indian whore who was making her way around the laps of guys watching the show. In my head, I thought she'd got herself drunk because she hated her job and was forced into it by racism or a bad family, so when she got to me, I told her how I'd been working in India and asked where she came from and showed concern about her drunkenness and asked in Hindi whether she needed some water, etc... She sat on me for the the rest of the show. To prove to her that I was a gentleman who loved her for who she was (unlike all these other assholes), I didn't fondle her.
I noticed a fat guy staring at her heaps while she sat on me.
I was at the brothel for a friend of a friend's birthday and he came over towards the end of the show and started feeling her. He was pretty much a friendly stranger to me and he was joking about my success with this girl while he felt her. It was weird and I didn't like him doing it but I didn't say anything because I couldn't think of anything to say to stop him without sounding totally outrageous, so eventually the whore got up and said something like, "You'll let him do this to me?!" and left, which I thought was understandable but really unfair.
So I went to the reception area where the madam lady who sold us our tickets was to ask her for the Indian's number. There were quite a few people there waiting for something so it was quite embarrassing for me. The madam asked "Why?". I didn't expect to have to explain myself because I thought I was a cool young guy and she should be happy that I was taking an interest beyond sex in one of her girls, so I said something really lame like, "I think we get on... I mean, I didn't spend much time with her... but I think we got on quite well." The lady said "No." without being polite at all, so I said, "Yeah, I thought as much." and left. I remember thinking that bitch had doomed the Indian by refusing to give me her number and, later, regretted not fondling the Indian at least a little when I had the opportunity.
