I secretly wanted the designers to take weapons either produced or prototyped prior to the point at which Fallout's chronology branched off from ours (the post-atomic, pre-space age, to be precise) and extrapolate the results of ~125 years of unchecked advances in military science, producing something that looks more interesting than a UMP-9 covered in rivets and rusty doodads. At least it's an improvement over the first two games, which ripped their guns either from offline RPGs (Shadowrun, WH40K) or, worst of all, real life.
Also I wanted an excuse to post pictures of submachineguns. Here are some more I like!
Czech army model of 1947. The first SMG to house the magazine inside the pistol grip, creating a more balanced weapon. This magazine, like the one in the following weapon, holds 40 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Beretta model of 1958. See how the ultra-sexy vertical foregrip resembles the calf of a voluptuous Italian woman, minus the body hair? That's craftsmanship.
Carl Gustaf model of 1945. Prized for its accuracy and reliability by CIA spooks and Army rangers alike, the 9mm "Swedish K" was the ultimate status symbol in the jungles of Vietnam.
This was the alternative. Originally developed as a cheaper replacement for the Thompson during WWII, the M3's resemblance to a mechanic's tool earned it the nickname "Grease Gun." Inaccurate and heavy thanks to the .45 caliber chambering and "production-friendly" components.
Franchi model of 1957. Note the perforated heat shield, useful for keeping both the barrel and the user's hands within operating temperatures. Fallout 3's SMG looks like it could use one of those, but what do I know? |
