Of course, I was expecting it to be terrible, hence the not seeing it sooner. I actually quite enjoyed the action/adventure elements in what everyone was telling me amounted to "glorified torture porn." I seriously have no idea what kind of actual porn they're watching for that analogy to make sense, I imagine some kind of Turkish Emmanuelle with Turkish Harrison Ford beheading Wookies on a trampoline.
If you want to see actual torture porn, rent Hard Candy. Ellen Page plays a teenage girl who kidnaps this guy who likes teenage girls (sexually, I mean) and punishes him and psychoanalyzes him and always stays two steps ahead of him, which kinda undercuts her whole point about teenage girls needing to be protected from guys like him but whatever. Page is pretty hot for an androgynous type and according to the box it got two thumbs up, but on the other hand unless you're really into underage girls like Ebert and me, you'll just be wasting your time with this one. |
