Actually it's awesome (still.)
While I genuinely hate the School Days atmosphere, the game mechanics are just kinda great. Also, I had totally lost a lot of the character in the endless reams of fanfic I've read - they're not as bad as I remember, certainly not nearly as bad as Suicide Princess Yuna and High Fagmaster Tidus. It's really nice to be able to mix-and-match grindan. I'm going for a low-level game, but I'm not too anal about it: coming out of Disc 1, my party (Squall/Zell/Rinoa) was at level 14. Just Card everything and it's painless.
Carding all those enemies means drawing for magic is kept to a bare minimum - rare/expensive spells only. Card/magic refinement also means that there's not really a penalty for using magic, since it's easy to just make more.
