They're basically as reasonable as any other game now. They can be, at times. But there's enough bullshit that I'm willing to cite it as a central problem in the game.
-no checkpoints
-boring driving, picking people up, driving, errand, preceding mission that you have to replay thanks to the above
-arbitrary conditions to force you to play the mission the way it was "intended", particularly in chases. Invulnerable enemies, scripted, cutscened getaways, it's got all kinds of shit that annoys me.
-failure conditions premised around the shitty partner AI. Especially when compared to how useful and rarely problematic last gen allies in Godfather and Scarface were.
-penalties for failure. If you want to make me reload a save, make me reload a save. But don't have me go to the hospital, shell out a ridiculous amount of money designed to pretend the cash in the game isn't meaningless, and then run around restocking all of the crap you know I need to do the mission.
-no intelligent car saving/delivery. Godfather, Scarface, and Saints Row all have people to deliver you cars anywhere at anytime for a nominal cost at most. I can't begin to say how much better this is than hailing cabs, especially as you head into millionaire territory.
-no checkpoints. WHY? WHY?
Also comparing Saint's Row 2's ancillary stuff that no one cares about with GTA IV's ancillary stuff that no one cares about works off the assumption that Saint's Row 2 is going to be as good as GTA IV on the general stuff, like not feeling dead. Did the Saint's Row demo just feel exceptionally dead, or is the whole game like that?
The thing is, I did my best not to care about the GTA4 stuff referenced in that video. But I did it at first to get a reward, not realizing that the rewards mostly sucked and was fleeting if you didn't keep up the work. AND THEN THEY JUST KEPT CALLING ME, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I guess it was the mission with Phil Bell and the warehouse that finally made me walk away, but if I hadn't been so irritated at all that side stuff already I probably would have had a few more tries in me.
Anyway, like I said to Last, I just think it's positive they're focusing on things I hate in GTA4 and either not doing them at all or correcting them by at least making them as unobtrusive as possible for the immersion crowd and me to coexist in peace.
I've only played SR1 for like an hour so far, but while the story does not disappoint in being a caricature that would embarrass Quentin Tarantino, in general I don't think there's much wrong with the world. Liberty City is prettier, to be sure, but nothing is really going on anywhere unless you're on a mission. SR feels like you're in a turf war, more or less, which makes the environment a lot more lively to me. That's also what made Scarface and Godfather winners, I guess. |
