Why not just switch to multiplayer-only games (like I did many years ago)? The general problem with beating an AI is that you have to trust the developers when they tell you you've done something notable. The economics of arcades make it harder for them to lie outright, but still.
The article hints at this idea, when he makes a pilgrimage to the fighting games area and claims you can smell the competitiveness, but he stops just short of dismissing the obvious conclusion, and hurries back to his 1cc thesis just as fast as his beautiful prose can carry him.
