Really? I was going to pick up Ghost Squad for the price and gay unlockables anyway but every review i've seen have Umbrella Chronicles as the perfect shooter and GS as harmless shovelware.

They are drunk. Drunk reviews written by stupid people. Ghost Squad is not actually perfect. The level structure is a bit iffy and the game is a bit short if you're not into redoing the 3 primary stages until you beat all ten levels (the game does save your progress in that sense). But it integrates "action moments" painlessly and in a manner that doesn't toss them out from left field, meaning you have plenty of time to adjust for the different move. The shooting, which is the key part, works great. HotD3's shotguns are still my favorite, but GS does a really good job with the targeting windows and the level system to make the challenge curve interesting vs arbitrary. I wish I could have gotten it when Target had it for ten dollars, but I don't regret the 29$ I ended up spending on it.

OTOH, RE:UC relies on those same quick button press context moves that RE4 did, the difference being that these are thrown at you all of the goddamned time in boss fights meaning you have a tiny window of time to push buttons not in reach of someone holding it as a gun. The window for shooting zombies is also very short and unfun, and the game delights in making you use the nunchuk which is a big pain in the ass. I don't want to remember button combinations and manage inventories when I'm playing a rail shooter unless they are very unobtrusive and well integrated.

I guess my biggest problem is that it integrates Resident Evil length levels with like 2 checkpoints per level. Meaning that the problem created by direct arcade ports (game over insert coin!) has been replaced with another annoying mechanic that is worse for having been crafted intentionally to fuck you. Even when I beat a level, I don't feel it was because I was any good at it. Beating bosses feels almost accidental.

Anyway, I really wanted to like this game. But I haven't touched it since the other two showed up except once which exactly confirmed my first impression. Zero Punctuation had an entertaining rundown of the game, but I think it's both too easy on the game and shows an obvious bias against rail shooters.
I've found the Nyko guns to have the trade off of looking cooler versus Nintendo's embarrassing space rifles better precision. The size and weight difference make double shooting difficult but if you're playing these by yourself you probably deserve it. Being able to buy two guns and House of the Dead 2/3 for under $60 was pretty huge for me. Way to become relevant again Wii!

Well, for me the Zapper only works if I shoot from the hip (lap), and my accuracy plummets and I have to start using the on screen reticle again and it feels like a mouse clicking game. I can't figure out who the ergonomics are designed to benefit, but it's not me. Shooting with the front hand is really, really uncomfortable, and games of this nature should be discouraged from including the nunchuk.

With the Perfect Shot, I can comfortably hold it like a gun and go to town, and with games that have calibration that works (HotD 2/3, GS, surprise, not UC) be tricked into thinking I'm aiming instead of pointing. Also, the appearance is important, as it allows me to easily sucker people into trying it vs the zapper.
