I'm sympathetic to your cause, as I love music and video games, even though it wasn't until Beatmania that the concepts successfully united. One of my early game ideas back when I developed shareware games (oh that's right, Mischief Maker) was to cast Metallica in a side scrolling platform action game. The good part of my idea was when I ripped off everything from Blackthorne. The bad part was the Metallica aspect. Lars can throw spinning drumsticks, while James can shoot CHUG CHUG CHUGs out of his guitar at the various bad guys. The game writes itself! I had a theory that we'd simply ask permission from Metallica, and they'd probably give it since I was a loyal fan and there wasn't much money to be made from this anyway! Fortunately my programming partner never signed off on this idea so it never got to any embarrassing level. I later tried to re-pitch it to him as a Red Hot Chili Pepper game, but he still wasn't into it. His counter-pitch involved him filming his cat in front of a blue screen (bed sheet), "like Prince of Persia rotoscoping".
Much later when I said that the Lion King platform game was pretty good he angrily asked "Then why didn't you want to do my cat game idea?!"
We never made another game together. |
