We made it through maybe 30 minutes of this snoozefest. Never have so many self-important FUCKS come together to tell the rest of us how shitty we are. One of them (Chris McCandless) was so important and right about everything that he ended up starving to death, while Sean Penn and Eddy Vedder are unfortunately still here to impress us with their impressive talents and righteousness. McCandless is basically Zseni meets Quentinbec, overeducated and determined to show everyone the right way to live, which is to wander around spouting off to anyone who will or won't listen until you die because you forgot to eat. We got as far as him running into a self-described "hippie" couple who tell him he's being too hard on his parents (they obviously don't understand how insulting it was for his parents to offer him a new car when he graduated college, when his shitty Datsun runs JUST FINE JEEZ THANKS DAD, PSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!) (later this Datsun fails to float when McCandless forthrightly parks it in a flash flood area). In return for them totally siding with his parents, McCandless heals the hippies' relationship by splashing around in the ocean for a while. I relate this anecdote for two reasons: 1. it was the only one we saw. 2. One of the hippies asks (jokingly?) if McCandless is Jesus and will he walk on water, and McCandless avoids the question by saying he's afraid of water. So I guess he is Jesus but forgot how to make fish come down from the sky.
Then we turned it off and watched Payback on (basic) cable, AGAIN. |
