Drooling, useless, unprovoked, and unoriginal. But concise!!!

Maybe if I'd stuck with the post long enough to write more than two words, things would have at least been longer.

If I'm going to buy a game, ideally it should be fun immediately. If I'm not only buying a game, but also paying for the privilege of playing it for any length of time on top of that, then I damn well better not be dedicating my first month of subscription fees to getting my character up to the point where the game is fun. If I'm going to get auto-billed for a game I'm not even playing because I thought I might come back to it but never did and didn't mark my calendar with the exact day the subscription renews, then it needs to fucking impress me immediately. I cancelled my CoH subscription when my "free trial" (i.e., the subscription I payed for by buying the software) expired. Maybe I had more than two powers by then, I didn't keep careful notes of my gameplay experience. I know I played three or four different characters trying to find the "fun" class, and never did.

For future reference, how much time and money should I invest in these things before it's okay for me to call them crap?

It strikes me that you have discovered through experience that you do not enjoy this gaming genre. That being the case, I'm not sure why you are asking other people to disprove your opinion or justify their own. Knowing that you don't like MM games, you are a retard if you invest any additional time or money in them. But on the bright side, you're free to call a game crap at any point in time. I suppose the more time and money you invest in a game, the more justified you will be in expressing disappointment/outrage if it does not meet your expectations. But, again, since your expectation should be, "I will not like this MM game," you'll only have yourself to blame.

Personally, as a casual gamer, I kind of liked the fact that my one MMORPG experience started out slow and built. To me, that added a sense of realism and contributed to the immersion. I had fun in the noob areas and became intimately familiar with them as one would become intimately familiar with his home town in real life. This contributed to my sense of wonder when I later struck out and started exploring the world around me.

I suppose, if people play a lot of MMORPGs, they get antsy to get past the early stages of the game and get on to the 'leet experiences available at higher levels but, for me at least, this defeats the purpose of an immersive experience. If I'm going to invest a lot of time and money in a game, I want it to be an experience that will build and change over time. If I could just twink my character I might be kick ass, but the experience would be less rewarding. I personally liked spending a week on a quest to get a single piece of equipment that my character would use for the next 15 levels.

Just my $.02.
