HOWEVER YOU RAISE AN INTERESTING POINT: which is - what the fuck is that late Aughties pop-rock sound? I'm not the World's Best Music Theory Guy but fuck if they aren't all playing in the same, uh, what do you call it, "diatonic scale." It's not so much that it all sounds the same as that it all sounds like it's interpreting the same sound. Also, repetition of hooks has taken the place of any kind of actual dynamism.

The effect is almost exactly the same as replacing "excellent" with "double-plus good" - the same monotonic enhancement of a single sensation, rather than halos of additional meaning surrounding a new sensation which is almost, but not really like, a doubling of the previous sensation.
