I'd just as soon pick this up over skate, what with the ease of immediately having fun pulling tricks and not needing to put in hours of work to learn the mechanics. The sim aspect of Skate is being overstated a little bit. It's more realistic than Tony Hawk, but so is Santa Claus (<-- topical).

My only guess is that if it's just a sandbox game you can screw around forever as opposed to losing races for not fine tuning enough, but this seems like an easy out.

Close. It's that dicking around the sandbox in Skate is fun in itself, and it never feels cheap. It's all within your ability if you just did it a LITTLE better next time (I know I can!). There are still lots of ball breaking challenges to hate...
