The Oregon Department Of Unemployment is sending me on yet another month long mission to set up Unemployment Systems for another, less advanced, state. At this point I can probably ding them for a laptop since they expect me to sleep on the streets and scrounge for food in dumpsters like so much veronica. There exists a Magic Number: for prices over this number, I will probably not get them to pay my way on this one. Anything under it is fine! This is our biggest and most important Unemployment client so if I can name tools that will help me, I can have them! As long as they don't cost too much.
The problem is that nobody will tell me what the magic number is.
My guess is that it is no larger than $1500. I'm less like James Bond, the pampered hero whose many talents are thoroughly and expensively recognized, and more like Steven Seagal in Under Siege: I'm just a cook! The captain likes my cooking. I need a cook's laptop.
Things that I like: big processors, big screens, good graphics, and enough battery life to make my frequent trips between Corn, Iowa and Cat City, Oregon bearable. Of these, I can sacrifice battery life soonest.
Things that don't matter: hard drive size, dockability, weight, optical drives that can write, HD-DVD/BluRay capacity.
I have both a Palm and a Blackberry for supa-mobile stuff; I mainly need the laptop so I can play Morrowind in my hotel room. My brother expects me to be able to play Hellgate London with him, so kind of a laptop that runs Hellgate London too, that would be good.
Also, I don't know if these even exist, but as long as I'm asking for advice: I've been looking forever for a game pad that will hook up to my Palm TX. It's got wireless (infrared, I think) keyboard capability, but unfolding a whole keyboard just to play Pokemon is kind of depressing, so: I would be willing to settle for an infrared num pad!!! I just thought of that. Okay I'm going to go look for that and you guys tell me if you know about anything else. |
