It's vaguely mentioned in newspaper clipping's in Eli's lab. The vortigaunts and headcrabs appear in Half-Life 1, which is how they got there in 2. They crossed over during all the shitfuckery you caused and then got stranded. The Combine is some new alien race. The existing vortigaunts are teaming up with people to stop the Combine because they also consider them a threat, even though the openly state they're pissed you killed their leader (you can talk to them over and over for like 30 lines of dialogue). I'm pretty sure this is all vague on purpose, for the eventual big reveal in the next game. No one even knows who or what the G-Man is yet, nor how exactly he's related to all of this. |
