You shouldn't automate, but I suppose if you set up gambits and then walked into the lowest level area you could automate. There's a way to do it with higher level stuff by setting gambits based on resistances and spell damages and whatever. I wouldn't attempt it myself.

It's certainly not the best thing I would say about it. I would say that it streamlines and automates the WORST parts about jRPGs, which is the combat system. FF12 fixes critical areas of the combat to make it less fucking irritating, so that it actually approaches fun. Also: the "wait" combat mode actually pauses the game when you enter the menu, as opposed to FF2 and 3 where it simply stopped your characters from taking action while you were selecting a spell or item.
