The thing about Spartan that confused me is I kept expecting everything to be some kind of fake out, even all the way from Val Kilmer bitch slapping that guy so hard that a giant ridiculous spray of blood comes out (and then the guy kills himself soon after), and all this stuff, I was thinking IT IS ALL A CON AND NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS, and then it turns out no it's just a story with things happening. It just didn't seem real, so the whole movie was like not a real story.
I had the good fortune to walk into Spartan knowing absolutely nothing about it (part of the credit for that should go to the film itself, for holding any and all credits until the end). I too got that feeling of staged unreality, but without the ability to chalk it up to Mamet making yet another sub-Spanish Prisoner jerk-around picture, I just had to go with it. So the impression I got was one of watching a comic book - specifically, one of those post-Apocalypse Now self-aware Cold War stories like I grew up with. By the time Bill Macy popped in I had figured out what it was I was really watching, but by then it didn't matter, because I was having a good time. |
