John Frankenheimer's direction is the definition of "hit or miss" - this was the guy who gave us both Seven Days in May and The (Frank Sinatra) Manchurian Candidate on the one hand, and Reindeer Games and The (Marlon Brando) Island of Dr. Moreau on the other. With Ronin, for the first time in twenty years, he hit one out of the park. Credit writer David Mamet (working here under an alias) for turning a cliched cross- and double-cross story into a tribute to grizzled survivors, and nearly the entire cast (including fan favourites Jean Reno, Sean Bean and Stellen Skarsgard) for turning in the kind of understated performances necessary to make it work. Four out of four stars. |
