So here's the leading candidate: Radeon 9800Pro 256MB, $175.
Any complaints?
I have the next model down. Well, I am going to go ahead and guess that the 9600 is the next model down, because I've never heard of the 9700. Who knows any longer? (After preview, Google tells me the 9700 is used in laptops or something.)
Tewt and I agreed, in between bouts of him throwing his co-workers off flights of stairs, that we spent a lot more money on this shit when we were younger and funnily enough, less able to afford it. I like Radeon because it just works and I don't have to put the latest video drivers on my machine any longer in order to get some game to work that I won't be able to stand anyway. I had none of the weird shit every other card in the world has at one time given me, and the TV-out was flawless, should you be into that sort of thing. It being more like a toaster than a peripheral is the highest compliment I can give it. I don't know what is going on with nVidia lately, but there were plenty of times with my Geforce4 where you couldn't simply have the latest driver on your machine and run everything and -- AND! -- fixing that by going to a new driver broke older games. Hope they fixed it and all, but fuck that, I don't care enough to care any more.
Buy that 9800 and live, dammit. Live!!!
