And a hearty FUCK YOU to the Visual Pinmame guys. This is fucking awesome.
The download for the engine (exectuable) was one file, a nice .exe. This is an advantage over Visual PinMAME, as you need two programs to do anything. The tables were accessible from the executable download site, from the most part, and no stupid nonsense about getting the table file and then oh ho ho the ROM file, and the ROM file is warez so we can't have them both in the same file and blah blah blah. What a fucking improvement.
Instructions appear as you start the game -- I hit the plunger before I had a credit in the machine and HOLY SHIT the game told me what to do to fucking play it. Plus, nudge left, nudge right and nudge forward. I can't recall if all three are in Visual PM, but the fact that they are in this game is critical. Just having "nudge" is retarded, and any game without nudge forward doesn't fully comprehend the value of nudging.
I'll be playing this a lot and putting it on my MAME cab (currently in development). When it comes right down to it, I don't want or need original tables "emulated" -- it's never going to be as good as the real thing and there are plenty of real tables around. If something like Cyclone is emulated by hand, then great. I am interested in the original tables, and there certainly seems to be a good number of them around. My only improvements would be in letting the flipper buttons be mapped to the mouse so I can use the flipper buttons on my X-Arcade trackball (not a big deal once the cab is finished) and putting all the tables in a common download site that does not require people to register in order to get them. But this seems to be infinitely better than any other pinball product out there.
