there really isn't any sense of speed to the game.
Has any space shooter ever done this? Even in Freespace 2 I got the feeling I was riding a biplane when it took you 15 seconds to clear a couple hundred meter capital ship. The closest I can think of is the final mission in X-Wing where your speed gets tripled in the trench.
I think that's the price you pay for gun-heavy WWII-esqe dogfighting. Ever play a modern jet sim with near-mach speeds, even an arcadey one like Ace Combat? Your enemies are tiny distant pinpoints that you launch missiles at while the gun is more of an afterthought than a regular-use weapon. Personally I prefer the close-up dogfighting.
To be fair, the Freespace games had more of a sense of speed than their predecessors, what with the stars turning into streaks when you pull a hard turn or the shaking of the cockpit when you engage afterburners. I bet adding a slight fisheye effect and some faint "whoosh" lines ala. Burnout would give a decent sense of speed. I think I'll bounce that idea off the SCP crowd, see if someone wants to try it out.
Though to be fair, I think the cap ships are supposed to be a little bigger than that.
Even a 6km long Colossus shouldn't take a minute to clear =(
