2 games, actually, The Battle of Endor and The Battle of Yavin.
If, like me, you were a huge fan of space shooters before the entire genre died, these are some of the best freeware games of all time. Basically they're tech demos of the author's space combat engine showing off how it can recreate massive battles between huge fleets of AI fighters. Remember that scene in ROTJ where the emperor springs his trap and hundreds of TIE fighters swarm in and the expendible pilot says, "There's... too many of them!"? That's these games in a nutshell.
The interesting thing about this game is the dynamic between you and your wingmen. The numbers in this game are so massive it's impossible for you to win the fight singlehandedly, all you're doing is tipping the scales in favor of your side. Likewise, if you leave something to your wingmen to do, they'll fill in any holes competently. Combined it leads to you constantly juggling tactical decisions. You will never lack targets, but to win the game, you have to pick them wisely. Do you go for the ships still in tight formation entering the fray for some quick kills? Do you lose precious seconds searching for wingmen getting tailed to minimize losses? Do you try to take down the star destroyer launching fighters to put an early end to the attack? The bottom of the screen keeps track of how many wingmen you have left and when that number gets down into the low single digits, you're dead meat.
The game uses MP3s of the original soundtrack with limited thematic track switching, which is nice, but you might want to have some smelling salts nearby in case the basic polygonal graphics offend your delicate sensibilities. Control wise the game lies somewhere between the Star Wars Arcade game and X-Wing. Don't bother with a joystick, this game was made for a mouse. On the downside the radar is useless and I usually switch it off, and there really isn't any sense of speed to the game.
If you miss space sims and want something a little different, give these a try. Just don't start bitching when you get your ass kicked over and over. |
