I just found this on digg.com a few min's ago. - http://digg.com/software/Private_Torrent_Sites_Overemphasize_Share_Ratios_According_to_Bram_Cohen
According to Cohen he calls them "destructive" because the user share is punishing leechers. Well I have a few words for Mr. Cohen on this one! The community makes the site not the no name leechers! If you leech, help share it and don't hop off once you are @ 100% and only 6% share ratio. It hurts everyone.

Personally I'm glad OiNK is around and that we have a share ratio. I'm glad that we have good admins and a good community looking out for the best for us, there is nothing like having the best quality music / apps when we have everyone looking out for everyone elses best interests! I don't think share raitos "punish" anyone, it's only punishing those who are not willing ot help. The standard "leecher" is fine for those people on PUBLIC trackers who hop on and hop off, but not here.
Anyone else with me on this one?

I'm sure they are ssx, I'm sure they are.

Yeah, public trackers are brilliant for leeching. You can grab like 15GB and seed 0GB, it's like a free-leech period that never ends! :D
I bet Ben got banned from places like this and is sore. All the comments I've seen from him are dumb though, like he's upset that people are using his idea but not in the way he wanted them to. It's only because his way is outdated and a bit dumb now.
Yeah grandpa, can't handle what we've crafted your fuckin bitfallacy into? DEAL WITH IT.

I don't like the current system at most private trackers because you are "punished" for having unfashionable tastes.
I upload NEW torrents quite a bit, but a lot of what I download, no matter HOW long I seed, will never seed to a 1.0 ratio.
Does anyone else find this to be true?
Not at all, I find that if you're patient you can get to over 1.0 on most torrents, even on for example an episode of Lost - this typically downloads (for me) in around 20 mins (because I cap my d/l speed) and even though there are thousands of seeds and tend to find I've got over 1.0 in around 3 hours (and usually only have a useless u/l speed).

You're not seeding anything at the moment as far as I can see, so I find your post to be false.
Must've rebooted or lost power.
I am now, and am generally, seeding 15-20 torrents a time for OINK.
That doesn't refute the point I was trying to make anyway.
In order to download something unpopular that I may want, I have to seed for weeks over my 35k connection.
My ratio always hovers around .6-.65. I do appreciate the more lax restrictions at OINK, but something like IndieTorrents and their more strict enforcement can make it really difficult sometimes to download something rare or unpopular.
I'd imagine that IndieTorrents would want to spread as little music around as possible.

look at the status of private torrents compared to public.
have you guys ever downloaded public torrents? sometimes they have over 100 seeds and still don't get anywhere near as fast, as quickly, as private torrents. this is because no one cares about their uploading. everyone caps their uploads extremely low, and they don't bother to open their ports.
if i'm downloading something from oink with only 4 or 5 seeds, i can easily get speeds over 400kb/s and sometimes even more. on a popular torrent i'll get over 1mb/s within 10 second of connecting to the torrent.

He means that private torrent sites where you cant upload personal rips and stuff.. But of course he hates what we done with bit torrent.. took the ball and ran with it. Its better and improved. I dont have to worry about cease and desist letters on public sites. And most people are afraid to share or upload things on public sites.
I think this guy summed it up the stupid pretty well. |
