But I'm here to discuss my highly mixed feelings about Katamari 2, which I keep playing even though it makes me angry (see also: Morrowind.) I am 50,000-odd roses in on the million-roses-challenge, so I have for all intents and purposes played way too long. I am an expert and my opinion should be treated like fact. The soundtrack: made me very very angry. It was mostly poop and Nomiya-Maki-flavored poop at that. I hated 9/10ths of it, especially the Nomiya Maki parts. I think I liked Houston... maybe that was it. The gameplay: what, did they make the physics engine marginally better (more frustrating?) YES. Who cares? The gimmick levels: OOOOO they were fun, fuck you. The school levels are irritating but underwater? Sumo wrestler? Flowers? Fireflies? KA-WA-II. Loved them. Only the fireball levels made me fear and dread playing, even though they are at heart a good idea. HOWEVER: I was infuriated at the lack of roll-forever levels possible in the first one. Roll Forever levels are soothing OCD fun and under no circumstances should they have been removed. Playing as cousins: yes, excellent. Also dressing them up in ludicrous tiny outfits. Convenient ranking system in game and pvp allows one to play cousins-favorites and war for Katamari dominance. Had loads of fun leading all cousins in group rave, then kicking the shit out of them all at once. More games should have level selection screens that are fun to dick around with. Selection screens: SO IRRITATING. "YOUR MAJESTY? YOUR MAJESTY?!" Bro came around one night after I had all the cousins and he was all, "it's just like work." It is. All those people yelling for attention - they suck. They should shut up. I'm trying to rave here. OCD gratification: extremely high, including soothing menu from which I can examine my OCD collection of trophies garnered in game. BUT: the first game allowed you to sort your collection by size, name, type, etc. Katamari 2 only offered sort by type. BOO. The best sort was clearly by size anyway. Plot: stupid and not in a good way. Congratulations, you are an AZN overachiever, King Of All Cosmos! I already know what AZN overachievers are like. I wanted fantasy. Overall: 300 out of 300 repetitive handwashings; lacks elegance, ingenuity, but does in fact hit the spot. Time to clock another 5000 roses! |
