The first two he did as Frank Black are both classic, in my opinion. He probably could have held back half of the songs from Teenager Of The Year for a less terrible 3rd album, but hey: Teenager is one of the best albums ever, so I'm not complaining.
I see Trompe Le Monde as a dry run for Teenager Of The Year and Frank Black as an unfocused first attempt. It's very, very easy to picture "Motorway To Roswell" and "Alec Eiffel" on Frank Black.
One interesting thing about Pixies and Frank Black: for an underground indie artist, Charles Thompson sure does rely heavily on flashy guitar sidemen. One of the many pleasurable aspects of Teenager Of The Year is that he actually managed to snag an improved version of Joey Santiago in Lyle Workman (previously of Jellyfish). The guitar leads on their own are enough to carry the record, though they don't need to because most of the songs are totally awesome.
Anyways, yeah: Teenager Of The Year and if you ever get sick of it, Frank Black. In my HUMBLE OPINION (subjective) TOTY is the third-best record he's ever done.
