I've always been a big rail-shooter guy (sad) and Starfox was one of the landmark titles in that genre, rivalled in importance only by Space Harrier. Argonaut Software introduced polygon graphics to an entire generation of kids by super-charging their Super Nintendos with a dedicated 10MHz GPU built right into the game cartridge. Given that the SNES's central processor ran at 3MHz and even the Genesis' much-touted blast processor only clocked in at 7MHz, Starfox was able to deliver the arcade experience like few titles before or after.
Like most other classic games, the sequels switched to a fully 3D, free-roaming style of gameplay just because they could, leaving die-hard rail-shooter fans to obsess endlessly over the handful of titles released in that genre since - notably, the Panzer Dragoon series and the rhythm-game in rail-shooter's clothing, Rez.
I also like the similar tube-shooter style of games, but I'm not sure Jeff Minter's periodic efforts qualify as a "genre." |
