CLRMAMEPRO is some sort of rom management software, which is exactly what I need. I don't have a better description of what this program does because it's completely fucking opaque to me. I can hit SCAN to scan my rom list... And then I have a list of my roms... and I can click the FIX NAMES checkbox to... fix names (that seems to make scanning longer). At the end of it all I have little idea what I've done. I know DAT files play a role. Let's check the documentation.
(exe based) DatFile are the files with the file information. Each DatFile has a corresponding SettingsFile which is stored in clrmamepro's Settings folder. DatFiles and SettingsFiles have the same filename but different extensions. DatFile extensions are normally *.dat and SettingsFiles have a *.cmp extension. clrmamepro stores all its settings (Paths, Scanner options, etc.) in that SettingsFile. If you use a new DatFile you can create a default SettingsFile for it or update an earlier used SettingsFile.
Well that's that. I was hoping for an easy way to delete my busted and repeating roms or my mahjongs, but that appears to be only at the end of the two-year course that is Learning Clrmamepro. Way to go, free software authors.
It's developed by somebody who can't separate himself from the monstrosity that he has created. I'm sure the clrmamepro guy is nice and everything, but Jesus fuck -- people are already frustrated by the time they've acknowledged the fact that the incompetent MAME dev team has gone and updated the ROM set to Asteroids, Pong or the PDP version of Spacewar. clrmamepro only serves to make them more frustrated.
I can buy that you need a file that lists what the ROMs are all supposed to look like. Let's call it a snapshot of the .34 version of MAME. And obviously you need to direct this program to the shitty batch of ROMs that currently exist on your computer. That's it! Specify a source directory, a target directory and a ".dat" file. Or, as that douchebag put it, a "(exe based) DatFile."
I, like I suspect most of us, can't remember the last time I had to read instructions for a game or application, but clrrmamepro ended that streak.
...
... WHY IS HE KEEPING "SETTINGSFILES"? DOes he honestly think people are coming back to this after they get their working versions of Kangaroo to - what? - play around with it some more? Try new things? Experiment?
