I tried to figure out why this movie, though still suffering from the full fury of an unedited Lucas, was so much better than the previous two.
All the painfully lame dialog and romantic elements are still there. Stupid droids still run around going "ow!". R2D2 still does stupid stuff out of nowhere (even after the whole jetpack incident in Clones). The Emperor goes from "only intriguing character in the movies" to "over the top hammy hissing snake".
So what makes it better?
Because there's actually something at stake this time. The audience knew the entire time that it would be about the coming Empire versus defenders of democracy, yet 75% of the new trilogy focuses on Naboo and the Clone Wars, which are all in all boring and meaningless. Soulless clones vs robots (or worse, annoying lizards vs robots), do we really care who wins?
We KNOW that they're both just tools controlled by the emperor, so there's absolutely nothing at stake. The whole opening space battle of Ep.3 was technically fabulous (except for stupid droid comic relief), but it lacked meaning. The movie only gained these things once the Emperor gave the order. Suddenly it was justice vs the evil empire again. Everything was at stake. Things mattered. Plus John Williams finally pulled himself up out of the slump he'd been in (Duel of the Fates being the sole exception) to highlight the third act with some wonderful scores.
For a brief shining moment I actually got caught up in a Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi, despite Lucas's attempts to ruin it with his dialog. I can only imagine how good this would have been had he gotten someone else to write it. |
