That looks incredibly uninspiring.
In other RTS "news," for whatever reason, a few weeks ago I bought the WC3 expansion. I had stopped playing WC3 sometime after it came out because I was really busy with school and stuff. Also I thought it was generally boring. I should say that I do have some excellent memories of the game if only because I had my wisdom teeth removed the day after I bought it and a healthy dose of codeine made the whole exploration period almost magical. At the time, back on OMM, there was a discussion between myself, FABIO, and some other dude (That I don't recall posting before or after) about the game. Fabs hated it, I thought the game was okay. The other guy was sko elite player so he of course loved it.
Anyway, flashforward to the present, and I am having a pretty good time. I played about 4 missions of the campaign and thought to myself "this sucks worse than I had imagined" and promptly went on to battle.net in the hope that I might be able to get a few more hours of enjoyment out of it. Now, I am not a great or even good player, but I've had a pretty good time. I've mostly been playing random team games, and most have been good although Battle.net is a breeding ground for huge sacks of shit that have somehow learned how to play videogames. Even with 8 players, the matches are fast, usually between 15 and 25 minutes, with the really grueling fights breaking the 40 minute mark. There is a decent mix of units (while the races are different, they should have been a little more different) and strategies, and I have seen many methods work and fail for a variety of reasons. In the 4v4 game, even if one player on your team drops, it is possible to win if everyone pitches in. The hero system is actually pretty interesting and leads to a few tough choices. Really, the game is full of tough decisions -- something I didn't get or didn't play enough to get or simply wasn't there with the base game. The paths that seem obvious in earlier games (all air, or melee with casters behind, or nothing but fiends) are of course wrong and but even after that initial confusion the exploration period seems quite long.
There is an effect that occurs in this and some other games that I like. You have these huge battles going that require careful management for optimal results, but there is enough going on you can never devote your full attention to everything. This produces the feeling that everything is about to go horribly wrong and spin into disaster -- only with a bit of luck and the ability focus on what is important can you pull it off. Other games do that, but I have seldom had so many of those moments in a single match as in WC3.
After 60 undead games or something in the last month, I still haven't tried things like the Neutral Heroes or used mercenaries or half the items to any degree. As well, I played a huge air map last night that I hadn't seen before. As much as I want to despise Blizzard for their horrible, unoriginal plots and settings combined with stupid cutsy characters (a Panderan?! LOLLOLOLO! The ghoul just said "Wasssup?" LMAOARSDG!!), they seem to have produced a game that has so far entertained me. Will I keep playing it? Well, I suffer from hobby OCD combined with a short attention span. It's very possible I will never play this videogame again and spend the rest of the month doing something else, but for what it costs and given that I already owned WC3 I got my money's worth. |
