I finally got past disc 1 (just skipped all the cutscenes that were locking up then looked up the script online). Every review I've read mentioned that you'd groan at the plot twist. I didn't believe them. I figured by the time I got off the primative planet that I'd be so grateful that no twist could be outrageous enough to annoy me.
I was wrong.
Once the nature of the real villains is revealed it is pretty fucking groan inducing. It turned what should have been an awesome cutscene into me rolling my eyeballs at the characters' comments of the villains. I WON'T SPOIL THE SUPRISE, but I will say that after ripping the "hidden power that only surfaces you get pissed off at INJUSTICE" from DragonballZ (which you should have seen coming from hour 1 anyways), they go and rip off the villains directly from another undeservedly popular anime.
I was also wrong about the music not being bad. The worst I had run into at that point was the eternally improvising electric guitar solo dungeon theme, which is a complete mess of a piece that tolerable for 5 minutes and you end up listening to for an hour as it drives you up the fucking wall. There is also a piano piece that's supposed to be touching but again the guy tries to go crazy on an improved part and again it's a complete mess that tears you out of the oh so tearful moment. I can remember plenty of RPG's with completely mediocre and forgettable music, but can't recall one that had tracks that were flat out bad. I still say the overall score is so-so, since there are one or two good songs to balance it out, which is still a shame since SO2 had one of the best non-square soundtracks.
They also railroad you onto a very linear track after the primative planet. It's been 4 hours and they haven't let me go back and screw around with bonus stuff like inventors and levelling and such. The dungeon right after the planet has no way of healing so you're not free to level up to your heart's content there either.
BONUS HINT SO YOU DON'T GET SCREWED OVER LATE: Expand the facilities of the workshop in Peterny and nowhere else. Once you leave the planet the only workshop you'll be able to use is that one. |
