I dunno, I liked the Heretic and the Hexen games (the Hexen games moreso). Well, except the parts in the Hexen games about a 1/4 to 1/3 in, where your enemies show up with ranged weapons and you don't have any yet. I didn't think they were any uglier than id's games. Hey, they even mixed it up with grey and brown palletes. Plus, you fought Orko clones and The Violator from Spawn. And I finished all of those games. I gave up around 2/3 into Quake 2, it bored the Hell out of me and that was about the time the RPG spike hit.
