"Directed-energy" pulses can be throttled up or down depending on the situation, much like the phasers on "Star Trek" could be set to kill or merely stun.

Is this really the way to start an article? "Let me explain in terms a stupid can understand." *finger gun* "bzzzzZAP!"

James Jay Carafano, a senior fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation who blames the military and Congress for not spending enough on getting directed energy to the front. "The tragedy is that I think it's exactly the right time for this."

no shit, when is it ever not a good time for laser guns? I've been waiting for ineffective low-accuracy laser guns since GI Joe taught me such a thing exists.

For example, the prototype system can be mounted on a Humvee but the vehicle has to stop in order to fire the beam. Using the vehicle's electrical power "is pushing its limits," he added.

"Like the Excalliber ship in Babylon 5: Crusade!" is what a DORK would say. A macho tuff guy like myself just thinks it sounds like an excellent way to get people killed.

Just making sure Xtreme Alternative Defense Systems wasn't origanally named Radical Ray Gunz or something and came across

Just pull alongside whoever's shooting at you and try to aim a lightning bolt to incapacitate attacker...and like everyone else on that side of the street.

for some reason the picture is blurry and appears to have been doctored with mspaint but i'm sure they have a working model.

PD/G 105:

The PD/G 105 is our police and military-grade, professional-strength dazzling laser. With 105 mW of output power, it has 21 times the power of the PDLP, and runs off of just two AAA batteries

"Dazzling" isn't the first word i'd use when trying to sell someone a weapon. Also, i'm pretty sure in this day and age we're supposed to be using energy crystals to power our weapons.

the difference between a Federation phaser rifle and the Klingon model is that, while less powerful, the Federation rifle is more accurate and versatile.
