Fragile Allegiance
Build stuff on your asteroid, make money off the ore you mine, build ships and missiles to kill everyone else. Like a mix of Master of Orion and Metal Marines. The diplomacy model is very nice. You can set treaty terms like how long it will last, whether or not covert actions are allowed, and set a monetary fine for whoever breaks it. Combat and reserach are a bit limited, but it's still good for some time wasting amusement. Biggest shortcomings are the lack of a manual (only a playing guide is available on the site) which means it'll take awhile for you to get the hang of what does what, and also deprives you of some vital stats which you'll have to learn by hand. There's a tutorial, but it's basically a movie with subtitles showing how to play.
It can be run in DOS, but ran much faster for me in windows. I couldn't get the sound working right so I just disabled it (setting NONE for soundcard is the only way to get subtitles during the tutorials). It crashed to desktop every time I went to a menu until I went into the config file and set menuanimations to "OFF". |
