From a television (which is also a CRT - Cathode Ray Tube) it is recommended that you sit quite a distance away. In general, nobody sits that far away from monitors. Eye strain can affect your vision over the years. I just know that after eight hours of watching my old CRT, my eyes would ache, and that doesn't happen now.
