Somewhere between a CRT the size of a Korean sedan and a decent projector, there must exist a sweet spot for a good gaming monitor. I vote for this, which I picked up for about a grand (after rebate). It's well worth the money, especially justifiable if your job requires you to stare at a windows box for any length of time.
If your video card sports a DVI-D connector, as all the new ATI cards and almost all of the NVidia cards do, the difference is more than satisfying. It tops out at a native res of 1600x1200 (UXGA) and pixel response is rock solid (Viewsonic claims it's 3x faster than existing LCDs). Viewsonic has gay little names for all it's technology but the XtremeView® feature works, viewing angles seem nearly CRT quality. It's also HDTV 1280x720p ready, which makes upgrading to an All-in-Wonder sound appealing. Being an LCD it generates almost no heat/noise and will not microwave your face and suck your soul out through your eyes. It also comes with a pair of 3 watt speakers in the bezel and a built in mic, neither of which i will ever use.
Gaming is a motherfucking joy. Seeing UT2K3 purely digital, bright and crystal clear with not even a hint of ghosting is the reason I decided to post this. Max out the Visa, rob an electronics store, steal the old lady next door's SS checks or demand a raise, it's that good.
