Keep in mind Carlin is about 70 years old now, and you don't get (intentionally) funnier with age. Like Dave Barry, he's compensated for his infirmity by turning to tongue-in-cheek, ha-ha-only-serious social commentary, a perfectly respectable but less than perfectly humorous evolution. His pre-1990 material was and remains excellent.

I didn't mean to say that, historically, no one has ever been funnier than John Stewart is right now. I seem to recall thinking Carlin's earlier stuff was good, but it's hard to believe now. I've heard him a couple of times recently and just couldn't stand him. Here's an awesome, hillarious joke made by him recently: "Blargh! We only bomb coloreds! Except for when we bombed Germany, but that was because they were taking for themselves the right to bomb coloreds! That's OUR job!" Ha ha oh my sides. Creexul's hero!
