| SS2's music was annoying in the same way I thought Half-Life's was. It's ANOTHER case where the game at first seems to know how to do it right (ambient music = adds to the atmosphere, oh yeah I can dig it), and then it decides to fuck that up by suddenly dropping a phat beat that more properly belongs in something like Ikaruga.
I think I've done it before and I'll probably do so about a million times in the future, but I must again point to the Silent Hill series as a way to use sound FLAWLESSLY to add to the sense of dread, when it comes to both sound effects and music. SH2 wasn't a terribly *scary* game or anything, but I have to admit that the first battle with Pyramid Head sounds just absolutely insane when you're wearing headphones. You get these great strange roars, then this Einsterzende Neubaten-style clanging kicks in, finally the air sirens begin to blare and you're just sitting there wondering "okay what the fuck is going on here?!" And hell, this is an easy battle taking place in a very bland room (it's a fucking stairwell in a rundown apartment building - ooh, scary!), yet the sound all by itself somehow makes that one of the most memorable moments I've ever experienced in a game. |
