Q: Is Lionheart party based?
A: Yes and no. You create one character at the beginning of the game. During the course of the game you will be able to allow some other characters in the world to join your party and adventure with you for some quests, but this is your choice. You will also be able to summon magical allies to aid you during combat. So you can play with a party if you want, but if you want to solo the whole game, you can.
Anyone know the hard upper limit for how many characters you can have in your party? This should be the first thing listed in any FAQ about a role playing game. I'm still pissed that Freedom Force and KotOR caps you at four.
Ooh, I bet it's based on your Charisma or whatever the fuck they call it, like in Fallout. Man, that was fun, having two guys and a dog in Fallout 2 because I wanted to shoot guns better than I looked. That's a real noncommital answer from the FAQ, BTW. Sounds like you get some jerk to help you (or you're helping him) rid his land of whatfuckingever, then he leaves after the quest is done. I've never been a big fan of having an ever-changing rotation of party members, not in a level-based RPG where they always gyp you on the levels on your joining NPCs. No, jerkoff, being 3 levels below me doesn't really work.

Additionally! Please, somebody tell me that you can start a multiplayer game, create six of your own guys in Lionheart and go forth that way. This Ultima VI find-our-pretty-and-unique-prebuilt-NPCs!!! shit drives me up the fucking wall.
Why wait until VI? IV was just as bad (unless you meant IV). I loved how the first guy you got was Iolo the bard. If I was adventuring the countryside, the first guy I'd want by my side is a fucking bard. Who am I, Groo the Wanderer?

I'm sure that such a trick won't work, though, as they'll take their cure from Bioware (who did not allow this in Neverwinter Nights). This is exactly why Baldur's Gate II is still relevant -- it's the last decent top-down RPG that gave a shit about its player and cared more about his/her experience instead of trying to show off a bunch of NPCs that you're going to hate for being so fucking annoying.
Just barely, but yeah. Having NPCs that did their own thing was pretty cool (but often, poorly-timed). Plus, Shadowkeeper let you diddle their stats to make them more, um, "heroic" (i.e. no fucking stats below 10).
Also, skill that increases how much I can carry? Excellent. In Fallout, I had Strong Back and Quick Pockets. Inventory Boy!
