I read a strip occasionally and all I can think about is how little I care. What am I missing that the fanbois are seeing?
Never underestimate the power of recessive genes, but Megatokyo is also niche and like specialized porn and or RightWing Fundamentalist thinking, caters to a breed of people happily lapping this up. It's not so much a comic as a common tie to the geeks and nerdery of the world, where everyone can chuckle about being l33t. That the artists and designers make themselves 'accessible'? It is like having your own little God who understands your pocket protector foibles and helps you laugh at them in an easily digestible 3" by 5" strip.
And...er...stuff. ph34r /\/\y 2k337s!
The Megatokyo book outsold almost every other graphic novel in the nation the month it went on sale. If your niche is big enough, the money will follow.
Ok, admittedly graphic novels are already such a niche themselves that they're hardly any yardstick to be using as a measure of success. But according to the rants, Piro is making enough money to leave his career as an architect and have his fiancee leave HER job as well just to help out with the comic. I don't know how he did it, and I bet he half doesn't either, but if pandering to the anime masses means making a living doing comics, you can sign me right up.
Fucking GAY comics. The best Megatoyko was the one drawn by Ghastly where we find out Piro is actually a woman. Don't let that happen to you.

The Mac Hall one where he tries to kill himself at the con was also good
I saw some kind of Megatokyo parody where one of the characters is jerking off while talking to a chick. I forgot where I saw it though, and it might not even be up on any website anymore. ;-;
But I think the internet needs more Megatokyo parodies, because that comic blows. The real reason why it's popular is because it's anime-looking and it's well drawn. |
