I rate the first Silent Hill a 9.5, the second a 6, and the third a 7. Two was boring, and while three had isolated bits of creepy, there was zero mystery as to what the hell was going on and the plot sucked, leaving no arcing sense of dread to tie it all together. Someone who had a very unhappy religious upbringing wrote that game.
What would The Room be on that scale, and for what (vague) reasons?
So far, probably a 7. I'm enjoying it as much as SH3 but not more.
The plot seems to be taking cues from SH2, which IMO is good since that's SH2's best selling point by far. I've noticed a few names that are 95% likely related to things mentioned in SH2 (I'm not finished, I should point out, so I'm just guessing here), and here's a spoiler you will uncover about 2 minutes into the game: the cult is apparently wiped out thanks to SH3's ending even though the evil of Silent Hill somehow remains. I hope this means there'll be no more "religious people are SOOOOOO crazy, let me tell you!" angst. The combat is as good as SH3, which is to say it's still pretty boring, but at least it's not laughably easy. The scares are not as good, but the overwhelming sense of "WTF?!" is fully intact. I always like these games as much for the strangeness as the fear factor. It starts off okay but quickly gets too slow but later picks up again, so the pacing is uneven yet still better than SH2. Graphically, it's not as good as SH3 but it's still top-of-the-line by PS2 standards. (GameFAQs guys have complained about the quality on the PC version. As in, they say it's noticably worse.) The sound RAWKS as always, but one monster makes a laugh-out-loud weak noise when you attack them and the voice acting is still several notches below top-notch. Finally, I'm not sure I like the new inventory system because I've done a few too many Diablo-like "return to town and stash the loot you're not using" runs.
It's a good game. I just fear that the entire series is losing its impact with me. SH has a unique style that you can build up a tolerance for, so what once was incredibly weird and creepy has now become old hat. This is one reason why I actually like the few fundamental changes evident in SH4. |
