I rate the first Silent Hill a 9.5, the second a 6, and the third a 7. Two was boring, and while three had isolated bits of creepy, there was zero mystery as to what the hell was going on and the plot sucked, leaving no arcing sense of dread to tie it all together. Someone who had a very unhappy religious upbringing wrote that game.
What would The Room be on that scale, and for what (vague) reasons?

No flashlight. No dark areas
You know what the scariest moment for me has been so far in Doom 3? The area just before you send out the distress signal where there are a rooms (break rooms by the decor) with normal level fluorescent lighting. I just stopped there for a second at the shock of finally running into a fully lit area. Then I saw blood streaks, total non-shocker up until this point, running across the white tile floor. Seeing something out of place like that in an otherwise every day area was much more effective then using it in endless rusted, dark corridors. Then I rounded the corner and there was a chainsaw zombie staring at me with the bright, sickly fluorescent lighting reflecting off his sickly rotting flesh right before he started chasing me through the room and passed the vending machines, coffee makers, and microwave. That was by far the most the game made me jump.
That's what made the atmosphere work for the System Shock games; you had what used to be a lived-in, everyday environment that had suddenly turned into a horrific slaughterhouse nightmare. You wandered through shopping areas streaked with blood while the computer calmly announced for routine crew gatherings in an attempt to draw out any survivors. Suddenly that cute brunette in administration that you had your eye on rounds the corner and you see that her face has been flayed off and her legs have been sheared off to be replaced with metal stilts.
Put all of this in 20 hours of Quake corridors with monster closets? Boring. Again, all the non-technical bits of Doom 3 seem like they were done by amateur mod makers. |
