maybe 20 years of playtesting has produced a game worth playing.

You've never played a Gamesworkshop game, have you?

The version of the game I played was Warhammer 40k Epic -- partly because it had cool giant robots, partly because all the minatures were extra small so a huge army could fit on a table, and mostly because the small miniatures meant way less money spent buying and way less time spent painting the things. The problem I had with it is that they changed the rules every single month. I gather they did this with all of their games. Maybe it was their way to keep you buying their magazines. I dunno. But it was utterly impossible to ever know what the most up-to-date rules were for any given situation. So obviously, nobody gave a shit after a while. And then the game fell into disuse. I still examine the pieces occasionally, like an archaeologist examines mysterious painted ceramic bits that he's unearthed, and think something along the lines of, "Warprunner. Huh. I vaguely recall what that means." or "Space Marines. Would people really still put the word 'space' in front of nouns 40,000 years from now?" The urge to play it has not returned, although I am interested to see how this new RTS game turns out.

I remember that my friend called the Traitors "Opportunists" whenever he played them since he thought that put them in a somewhat better light. That was amusing.
