If you take my suggestion and got three 120 GB drives (each cost around $130) and put them in a RAID 5 configuration then you'll have 240 GB of storage with parity. If one drive dies, no matter which one it is, you won't lose any data. Replace the drive, rebuild the RAID, and you move on with your life as if nothing had happened. Motherboards that support IDE RAID cost about $150 generally speaking. You could also buy an IDE RAID controller card and add it to your current machine.
A quick look on google turned up this article which not only explains the various kinds of RAID but also talks about some PCI RAID cards. I don't have time to read it, but I can tell you that AnandTech has a reputation for knowing their shit. |
