First of all, what is average failure rate of a drive? How much time do they last until it just dies of age? 1%/year is a good rule of thumb. If continuously on, and protected from physical shock, most will last 10 years and more.
What options do I have?
Swapping 30+ DVDs sounds tedious, especially if your collection changes frequently. Inconvenient backups tend not to get done.
Keeping copies on a new harddrive is simple and cheap. Be sure to get a second copy of the data before investing in plain redundancy (RAID, or instant software mirroring); it won't protect against human or software errors.
