And yet 18 people are dead. They want it reviewed and repealed even as people continue to die. Like I said, I have every confidence that they have it under control. It was thought to be under control before in HK and Singapore and wasn't. Neither city trails Toronto in medical capability. Err on the side of caution.

No we don't, not in technical aspects nor in facilities anyway. But i'ld like to point out that the competence of doctors is somehow sadly lacking in both these countries. Since we blame a lot of our talent loss of the bloody brain drain. Our best and brightest fuck off to higher pay and better life elsewhere in the world, like say, Canada.

Also, the amount of personal responsibilty taken by the citizens of the above can be dubious at best. Yes, we're afraid, yes some of us are paranoid. So we buy mask. Even with my basic knowledge in molecular biology, i can easily say that a mask isn't gonna stop you from getting infected when someonw sneezes on you. At best, you look cautious, at worst, you look stupid walkinga round in one.

Also, instead of wonderfully research western medicine, we're now relying on a cornucopia of chinese herbs to stem the tide of infections. GINSENG 4EVAR!!!!. I wonder who out forth idea that because it's an oriental herb, it's panacea.

"Better safe than sorry" is not an appropriate standard, and comparing Toronto's protestations to the actions of Mainland "oops, lied again" China is beneath you.

Here is where I point out that Hong Kong complained similarly when the advisory against them was put in place. "We have it under control!" They cried, and then 200 people were infected in the Amoy Towers. Better safe than sorry is absolutely fucking applicable.

I'd also kinda like to point out that there is several dozen probable cases right here in New York City and not one single goddamn fatality. The dangers here should not be downplayed in any way. The last fucking thing NYC's economy needs right now is a similar advisory, but I would be behind it 100%.

The thing about HK and Singapore as opposed to Toronto is that a large majority of their economy depends on the tourism industry. Heaven help the government who has to consider all sides of an economic meltdown in our current global situation with regards to war, SARS and whatever the fuck has been plaguing us for some time now. (MUTHERFUCKING JAPAN NEEDS TO GET ITS SHIT TOGETHER)

So yeah, HK would like to say it's got it under control, highly unethical of them if they're lying through their teeth. Yet, still within reason that, hey we're dying already, stop trying to drive the bloody nail in the coffin and see if there's anyway we can saved here.

That being said, Singapore has at least got it mostly under control. I guess due in part to the government effective control over all aspects of life there and the general paranoia that permeates the people there.

Also, that 5% figure appears suspect: http://www.politechbot.com/p-04669.html

I'm not sure quoting a source that says the rates are vastly higher is working against me any here. I'm advocating obsessive caution, it seems that if the mortality rate was so significantly higher it would make sense to have even broader advisories and quarantines. Also, the 7.2% figure was from a recent cnn.com article, I assumed it was an official WHO number. I have no idea how they arrived at it.

Stop with the percentages and shit statistics like that.
Let's count the actual numbers.

From here.

Some simple maths and
......

Voila

5.5% deaths

as opposed to

47.5% recovery.

though admitably, China's stats are dubious at best.
