Whoa whoa whoa whoa hey-there, chief. I only listed the albums I *purchased*. This does not mean I didn't have a NIN fanboi period, Marilyn Manson phase, or that Veronica doesn't own literally thousands of CD/tapes/mp3 rips of them.
I see. I guess it really depends on whether Veronica actually makes you listen to stuff. For instance, I own a lot of stuff that I've never played for my wife because she doesn't like her music edgy. So, she doesn't know the Pixies well, she hasn't heard My Bloody Valentine, she doesn't know Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb, the list goes on. Those cds are all in our apartment, but if she wants to put something on it's going to be Al Green.
Been there, done them. Pixies rule, duh. Any band with Kim Deal *almost always* rules, and Pixies and Breeders are where she rules the hardest.
Kim Deal is the motherfucking man, (and is *a* motherfucking man), agreed. Don't discount, though, the contributions of Charles Thompson
(Black Francis") and Joey Santiago. Back in his day, Frank could write 15 awesome songs to Kim's 1. He sucks now, of course, but he's over 40. Nobody can keep their edge that long (except TMBG). Frank Black's Teenager of The Yearis the third-best album in the Pixies canon (behind Doolittle and Last Splash). Joey Santiago basically invented the way indie rock freakout lead guitar would be played.
Fuck Sonic Youth in the ear. I hate them.
That's understandable. They're definitely stupid assholes and it comes through in their music (and their lyrics are beyond awful). But they're still required listening, since they did amazing twin-guitar things that have yet to be duplicated.
OK, I've never heard of Tom Waits. Noted.
He's very good for a certain mood. If you like to drink, get Small Change - best get-drunk record EVAR. If you like to sit in a dark room and worry about your mortality, then it's Bone Machine. There's a bunch of other interesting concept albums in there, other Waits fans would probably recommend one of those instead, but whatever.
Jawbox, at least, I will check out - as well as Fugazi. Burning Airlines is not one of the bands I've ever heard ToD compared to, but I'll at keep an eye peeled.
Jawbox is great. Burning Airlines is basically the same band in a different configuration, with less dissonance, more space, and faster songs.
Fugazi... I don't understand why ToD gets compared to them, I just don't see it. I love Fugazi, but depending on what you're looking for they have radically different periods. Their first album is sort of reggae-punky, then they hit their most characteristic period (Margin Walker EP, Repeater) where they were the world's tightest post-punk band, then they got very experimental and made what I think were there best records (Red Medicine) but no one agrees with me on this.
No, GYBE apparently reminds everybody of Mogwai. To such an extent that, once again, you're the first person to even mention Branca to me.
Glenn Branca isn't a rocker so much as a New York art-fag a la John Zorn. In the 80's he created these "symphonies" from huge groups of guitarists and bassists to go out and make minimalist textural stuff that presaged modern day indie-rock guitar textures. Page Hamilton (of Helmet) and Thurston Moore are both Branca alums. They're sort of hard to get into, my tendency is to listen to them and go "*shrug* This is interesting, I guess." Kind of like GYBE!
Egotistical self-jab: isn't Chris Walla the amazingly good-looking one?
?
Why, are you he?
He's the skinny Brian Eno-looking one. |
