Agree, halfway. Intellectuals suffer the blessing and curse of abstract thought: an ability to simplfy and reveal inconsistency ("dangers"), and a knack for generalizing too-simple models into really, really shitty solutions.

That's very true.
I don't want to be the shitty-solutions sort of intellectual; can it be helped? Possibly not. There are worse fates than being the next Karl Marx - for example, being the next Andrew Sullivan - but in general I wish there were a system that channelled the abilities of intellectuals into some sort of useful social/industrial/economic currency. And many suggest that bureaucratization is just that. But - but - there are a thousand different directions I could go from there, from the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy to blah blah blah more theory and LOL simplifications and systems and probably shitty solutions.
Do the intellectual and the executive ever balance out? |
