SB gets high, loses memory...film at 11 by veronica 03/14/2003, 12:36am PST
I didn't get much sleep last night. I tried to go to bed on time. SB came with me, and after a few...pleasantries...I decided to get up and grab a glass of water. There was nothing unusual up until this point. SB had been having trouble sleeping (insomnia is typical for bipolars), and so he had taken some Ambien, as prescribed by his psychiatrist...but unbeknownst to me.

As I moved to get up, SB sat up slowly, and started to keel forward. He landed across my lap, frantically grabbing at the sheets and trying to pull them over his head. "What's wrong?" I asked, and he didn't answer me, just stared blankly and appeared to be struggling to breathe. He has asthma, so I thought he was having an attack, and struggled to dislodge myself from under him so I could get medication. But then he lay back down, and although he didn't respond to me, I could see that he was breathing. I took it to be an odd sleepwalking thing, and went to get my drink.

I had no more poured a glass of seltzer water than I heard him cry out. Going to the bedroom doorway, bottle in hand, I saw SB sitting up in bed. He stared at me, and finally asked, "Are there two of you?" I replied that no, there was only one. I quickly put the bottle away and came back to bed, saying, "See? Here I am, just one of me." He continued to point at the doorway, and replied flatly, "No, there's another one of you in the doorway still." My high school "babysitting-the-high-friend" must have kicked in at this point, even though I didn't know what was going on. I said, "Enh, she's the slow one, she'll get here eventually."

He covered his head with the sheets, and started moaning about "things" that were attacking him, and he had to get his gun (he named a specific weapon of course, I don't recall which one), and motioned as though he was pulling a gun from a rack, and then motioned as if he were shooting the "things". It was at this point that I asked him, "Did you take the Ambien?" Yes, he had. Ah. The kid was high.

I state this story matter-of-factly, but I was quite alarmed at the time, before learning that he had taken Ambien. After that, high-school-babysitter the whole way. "It's just the drugs honey, it'll wear off, you just have to sleep it off." Some things never change though: in the middle of this, he rolled on his back and said, "So where's my blowjob?" Sigh.

He doesn't remember any of this. I didn't figure he would; his eyes looked like those of my old sick rat who was running desperately around my desk trying to breathe (she's fine now). In any case, I didn't get much sleep last night, until it finally wore off and he slept - for four hours, the insomnia still hounding him regardless.

Better living through medication, I guess.
